ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Audience members who attend Constant State of Otherness on Friday April 19th are invited to register for a facilitated gathering by Unit Souzou to share, reflect, process and acknowledge personal stories of otherness and its impact on our identities and lives.

In Constant State of Otherness, Taiko (Japanese drumming) is an energetic fusion of sound, movement and spirit through which we express stories of heritage. In this workshop, we will reflect on how the body, rhythm, and the powerful beats of taiko can engage us in questions of identity and belonging – how we identify ourselves and how we perceive others. How have I been othered? How have I othered myself? How have I othered others?

This workshop is designed with beginners in mind, no previous taiko experience necessary. Participants can expect to be active in sharing and listening. While this is not a 'how to play taiko’ workshop, everyone will be able to experience and play the drums as an expression of creative voice and identity.

ACCESSIBILITY:

- Hart House Theatre is wheelchair accessible.

- ASL interpretation can unfortunately not be provided for this workshop due to funding limitations.

- For the safety of workshop facilitators and participants, we strongly encourage everyone to wear a mask. We will have masks available at the door.
